About
Labyrinth New England is a new organization dedicated to presenting traditional and contemporary modal music of the Mediterranean, Middle East, North Africa, Central, and South Asia as a holistic art form that transcends national borders. We offer educational outreach, workshops, concerts, and other opportunities to study and perform this music to students and professionals of all ages and skill levels.
Our Goals:
- to promote the study and appreciation of the various modal music traditions of the world
- to connect existing and develop new audiences for modal music throughout New England
- to feature and give a platform to outstanding artists dedicated to modal music traditions, allowing them to share their creativity and knowledge with our growing community
- to provide training to young artists working within these traditions
- to help make the Greater Boston area a thriving hub for these modal music traditions through an active base of local performers
Experiencing culture from other places provides new ways to understand the world and ourselves, inspiring a deeper appreciation and empathy for the unfamiliar. Labyrinth New England facilitates inter-cultural exchange and appreciation, featuring traditional arts practitioners and MENA cultures in a cosmopolitan way that recognizes the musical language of this region as equal in value and complexity to more familiar western music.
Labyrinth New England is inspired by a global effort to elevate modal music traditions, initiated in 1982 on the island of Crete by Labyrinth Musical Workshop, and works in collaboration with the entire Labyrinth Network.
The Artistic Director of Labyrinth New England is Tev Stevig. Feel free to contact him directly with comments, suggestions for events, questions regarding resources, etc. via our Contact page.
